Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of digital literacy in enhancing students' critical thinking
skills in filtering hoax news at STAI Al-Gazali Bone. The study employed a quantitative
approach using an explanatory survey method. The research population consisted of all
active students at STAI Al-Gazali Bone, while the sample comprised 100 students selected
through the proportionate stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using
a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability and were analyzed using
descriptive and inferential statistics with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics Version 27.
The data analysis included validity testing, reliability testing, normality testing, linearity
testing, simple linear regression analysis, t-test, F-test, and coefficient of determination (R²).
The findings revealed that students' digital literacy was categorized as good, with a mean
score of 81.52, while students' critical thinking skills in filtering hoax news were also
categorized as good, with a mean score of 79.84. The regression analysis produced the
equation Y = 24.315 + 0.681X, indicating that digital literacy has a positive effect on
students' critical thinking skills. The hypothesis testing showed that the calculated t-value
(10.427) was greater than the t-table value (1.984), with a significance value of 0.000 <
0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Furthermore, the coefficient
of determination (R² = 0.526) indicated that digital literacy contributed 52.6% to students'
critical thinking skills in filtering hoax news, while the remaining 47.4% was influenced by
other factors outside the scope of this study. The study concludes that digital literacy plays
a positive and significant role in improving students' critical thinking skills in evaluating,
verifying, and filtering information, thereby reducing the risk of disseminating hoax news.
Therefore, strengthening digital literacy through learning activities, training programs, and
anti-hoax educational initiatives should continue to be promoted within higher education institutions.
